Non-Religious

If the deceased and their family have no particular religious faith, a traditional religious funeral may not be suitable. In this case, a non-religious funeral service is the ideal choice. Our non-religious funerals are designed for those without a particular religious faith, so they are not bound by religious rituals and can be arranged according to the wishes of the family or the deceased. Our non-religious funeral plans come in two types: ‘Hospital / Mortuary Departure’ (simple funeral) and ‘Funeral Parlour Service’ (standard funeral). Families can choose according to the number of attendees and their budget.

Taoist

In modern society, traditional funerals still play a very important role. With their solemnity, tradition and spiritual support for the deceased and their family, Taoist funeral rites are the choice of many families. Taoist rites in Hong Kong are rich and varied, covering many different ceremonies, including the Taoist priest leading the way, drawing water for blessings, writing the eulogy on white cloth, carrying the banner and buying water, tending the incense burner at cremation or burial, removing mourning garments, returning home to settle the spirit and making offerings to the ancestors, blessing the home, the grand Taoist ritual, breaking hell or lighting the five-path lamps, and sitting on the lotus.

Buddhist

In Buddhist belief, life is impermanent, and death is not an end but the completion of one’s practice – a graduation marking the start of a new journey and a change in the form of life. A Buddhist farewell ceremony therefore aims not only to comfort the living but also to guide the deceased. Through the blessing of the Buddha, it is hoped that the deceased will be freed from the cycle of rebirth and reborn in a good realm, or even enter the Pure Land. The ceremony, including the encoffining, flower scattering and the flaming-mouth ritual, is usually led by Buddhist nuns, who recite the sutra for the departed; or senior monks may recite the ‘Three Times Mindfulness’ on the night of the wake. These rites are intended to deliver the deceased through the power of the Buddha. Through sutra recitation and prayer, the deceased is guided towards a brighter future.

Christian

When a loved one passes away, every family wishes to remember and farewell them in a meaningful and appropriate way. A Christian funeral not only expresses faith in God but, through the memorial service, leads family and friends to look back on the life of the deceased and remember precious times together. We offer three types of Christian funeral service: ‘Hospital / Mortuary Farewell’, ‘Funeral Parlour Memorial Service’ and ‘Church Memorial Service’, to meet the needs and expectations of different bereaved families. Our funeral services offer personalised decoration, and the memorial service can be arranged according to the wishes of the deceased.

Catholic

With its solemn and sacred rites, a Catholic funeral prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased while bringing spiritual comfort to the family. At this difficult time, the Catholic funeral rites usually include the following main parts: the presiding priest leading the coffin to the altar, the greeting, prayers, the Liturgy of the Word with readings and the responsorial psalm, prayers of intercession, the blessing, the sprinkling of holy water and the offering of incense. This is followed by the farewell ceremony, where family and friends can say their final goodbye to the deceased.

Funeral Services
Frequently Asked Questions

Funeral services are the various services provided for the deceased, including funeral ceremonies held at funeral parlours, churches, hospitals or public mortuaries, and cremation or burial services. Funeral service companies offer a range of funeral packages that cater to the needs of different religions, offer green burial options and respect the traditional customs of the deceased, giving them a complete ‘graduation’. Whether it is a traditional funeral or a modern green burial, we can offer you the most suitable option and give you the greatest comfort during this difficult time.

Funeral service fees generally fall into two types: a ‘traditional funeral’, with a wake held at a funeral parlour or church, and a ‘hospital farewell service’, with the departure ceremony held directly at a hospital or public mortuary. Fees for Taoist rites, Buddhist rites and Western-style funerals vary widely, and the choice depends on the family’s requirements and budget.

To have the deceased cremated, you must first obtain a ‘Cremation Permit’ from the Department of Health at the Joint Office, then apply for cremation with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, book a cremation slot at one of its crematoria and pay the relevant cremation fee. Crematorium fee standards, calculation and payment methods all differ. These fees are part of the funeral service and ensure every procedure runs smoothly, so that the family can farewell their loved one with peace of mind.

ItemFee
Adult cremation (aged 12 or above)HK$1,220
Child cremation (under 12)HK$650
Adult burial (aged 12 or above)HK$3,190
Child burial (under 12)HK$2,605

Ways of handling the ashes include scattering them, placing them in a columbarium niche, or keeping them at home. Scattering means spreading the ashes in designated waters in Hong Kong or in a Garden of Remembrance; placing them in a niche means putting the urn in a public or private columbarium. Each method has its own meaning and rituals, allowing the family to choose the most suitable option according to the wishes of the deceased and the needs of the family.

Both funeral parlours and funeral shops (known locally as ‘longevity shops’) can arrange funerals. The biggest difference is that funeral parlours have mortuary facilities and halls, while funeral shops need to rent these facilities from a funeral parlour. Their services generally include guiding clients through or handling death certificate documents, applying for cremation or burial, selling or ordering coffins, urns, incense, candles, joss paper and other funeral supplies, and arranging staff such as ceremony masters, undertakers, Taoist priests and monks. These services ensure every detail is properly handled, so that the family can focus on mourning the deceased. In addition, funeral shops can offer personalised designs according to the family’s wishes, while funeral parlours, due to service restrictions, cannot provide customised funerals.

Applying for death documents is the first step in handling funeral matters. Under Hong Kong law, after a family member passes away, the family must register the death with the relevant government department. Registration is free of charge, and only after it is completed can you apply for a ‘Certified Copy of an Entry in a Register of Deaths’, commonly known as the ‘death certificate’. There is no fee for registering a death, while each death certificate costs HK$140 (collected in person / sent to a local address) or HK$275 (overseas applications). These documents are essential for the subsequent funeral services and ensure all procedures comply with the law.
