Scattering ashes in gardens or at sea
Depending on the wishes of the family or the deceased, green funeral can be arranged for the scattering of cremains in the Garden of Remembrance or at sea. The staff of Hong Kong Funeral Service will discuss the arrangement with the family and follow up the whole process, such as scheduling, applying for the production of memorial tablets, and so on.

Scattering ashes in gardens or at sea
For sea burials, families may choose to prepare a sea urn shaped like a shell for the deceased. The urn will float on the surface of the sea for a period of time and then sink into the sea to decompose and return to nature.
Organization of documents
From obtaining death documents, applying for death certificates, applying for cremators to the subsequent application for columbarium niches, funeral parlors can also provide follow-up services to family members.

The Designated Areas for the scattering of cremated human ashes at sea
With the approval of the FEHD, families may also choose to scatter the ashes of the deceased at three designated sites in Hong Kong waters.

How to apply for a Green Funeral?
Green Funeral applicants should possess a Permit for Collection of Ashes or obtain written authorization from the holder of the Permit for Collection of Ashes, and apply in person at the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Cemeteries and Crematoria Office in Hung Hom or Happy Valley at least 14 days prior to the date of scattering of cremated human ashes. The following is the application procedure for Green Funeral:
Application Form: Fill in the application form and bring the completed form to the Cemeteries and Crematoria Office of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.
Permit for Collection of Ashes: Applicants should bring along the original “Permit for Collection of Ashes” (this is not applicable to ashes still kept in government crematoria) and a copy of the Hong Kong Identity Document of the deceased.
Authorization Documents: If the applicant is not the holder of the Permit for Collection of Ashes, he/she should bring along the original authorization document signed by the holder and a copy of the holder's identity document for verification.
Application for Scattering of Ashes at Sea: For application for scattering of ashes at sea, the applicant is required to provide a letter of certification issued by the local Rural Committee as well as the original and a copy of the statutory declaration made by the legal representative or the nearest relative of the deceased to prove that the deceased meets the residency requirement of the Islands District.
Application Fee: Applicants are required to pay an administrative fee of HK$90.
Application Approval: After the application has been approved by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the applicant may scatter the cremated human ashes in the designated Garden of Remembrance according to the plan and the scattering fee is waived.
Plaque Memorial: The applicant may also install a plaque on the wall of the Garden of Remembrance where the scattering of cremains takes place in memory of an eligible ancestor. A photo of the deceased can be displayed on the plaque.
Applicants may download the application form (FEHB 219) from the website of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) or obtain the form from cemeteries and crematoria offices. Alternatively, applicants may fill in the application information through the electronic form (eFEHB 219) and submit the application online. For applicants who submit their applications through e-Form, by post or by fax, staff of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will verify the relevant documents of the applicants during the interview.
