The Core of Buddhist Burial
Hong Kong Buddhist Funeral Ceremony is a solemn and peaceful way to pay tribute to the deceased and help them embark on a new journey to the Pure Land through the guidance of Buddhist teachings. Under the guidance of Buddhist monks and priests, the deceased is reborn or transmigrated to the Western World of Ultimate Bliss, while the living are comforted by the Buddhist teachings. When a Buddhist passes away, his family members will recite sutras and Buddha prayers for the deceased, a ritual known as assisting in the recitation of prayers. This ritual is called “assisted chanting”, and it helps the dying person to keep his/her mind on the right path, so that he/she can pass on to the next life smoothly. In addition, Buddhists advocate frugality and compassion, and are opposed to wastefulness during funeral ceremonies. They do not burn paper money or kill living beings, and instead offer flowers, fruits and vegetables, and vegetarian food to the deceased in order to pray to the Buddha and Bodhisattva to guide the deceased to the Western World of Ultimate Bliss.

In Buddhist values, life is impermanent, and death is not an end but a graduation ceremony of spiritual practice, symbolizing the beginning of a new journey and a transformation of life forms. Therefore, the farewell rituals in Buddhist funerals aim not only to comfort the living but also to guide the deceased. Through the blessings of the Buddha’s power, it is hoped that the deceased can break free from the cycle of rebirth and be reborn in a good realm, or even enter the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. The entire funeral ritual, including the embalming ceremony and the scattering of flowers and offerings, is usually conducted by nuns, who recite the Reversal Sutra; or by high monks who recite the “Three Periods of Mindfulness” during the night of vigil. This ritual is intended to guide the deceased with the power of the Buddha. Through chanting and prayer, it seeks to lead the deceased towards a brighter future.
